The Europe 2013 WHO Report has revealed that we spend 90% of our time in enclosed spaces. The most concerning aspect is that, according to a parallel survey conducted by YouGov, we don’t realize it, and therefore we neglect or are unaware of the risks that being an Indoor Generation poses to our health.

The survey, conducted on a sample of 16.000 European and American individuals between March and April 2018, showed that over 80% of people are convinced that they spend at least 3 hours a day outdoors. But that’s not true!

On top of that, the knowledge about the negative impact that an “indoor” life has on our health is alarmingly low. Contaminated air, humidity, use of harmful plastics, poorly ventilated areas and poor lighting. These are just a few of the so-called “invisible killers” that affect our biological, physical and cognitive functions.

In addition, the new frontiers of home wellness and epigenetics clearly show that the surrounding environment influences, for better or worse, our DNA and our response to external stimuli.

Our advice to fight the negative effects of the Indoor Generation

It would be nice to spend more time outdoors and find connection with the Earth and with Nature again. It is an effort that we need to actively make whenever possible. But the truth is that our daily life is made of enclosed spaces: school, offices, home, shops.

This is why it is critical to ensure that these spaces are as healthy as possible. Here are some tips that you can put into practice immediately:

  1. Open the windows often and ventilate the rooms.
  2. Reduce the use of air conditioning systems to a minimum, choosing alternative solutions for temperature regulation in the rooms.
  3. Choose the lighting systems with care: on the market, there are now solutions that can detect the time of day and regulate the light accordingly, in full respect of the circadian rhythms.
  4. Invest in wellness and create a regenerative corner at home or in your workplace. Zerobody is your number one ally for a regenerative break to reduce stress, sleep better, recover from fatigue and get back on track with new energy. You only need 20 minutes, with no need to undress or get wet.
